A way out was released back in 2018, and since then, it has sold over 2 million copies worldwide. This is certified proof of how well this game fared among critics and gamers alike.
A Way Out offers unique gameplay that separates this game from other titles with no option for a single player. This game introduced Co-op mechanics that require you to form a team and guide each other through different puzzles.
A welcome change that promotes team effort and organized decisions, but online matchmaking is necessary for a game like this. And when there is online matchmaking, there comes a question that crosses everyone’s mind. Cross-Platform gameplay.
Many people have their own preferences on consoles, some people are fond of PC gaming, while others prefer to chill, laid-back sessions on the couch with a tiny controller in their hands.
A Way Out available for download on the day of its launch on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One? So is there a way that you can pair up with another user on a different platform? A Way Out supports Cross-Platform matchmaking?
Is A Way Out Cross-Platform In 2024?
There is no way you can start this game as a single-player; you need a gaming buddy to complete this title. And unfortunately, there is no support for Cross-Platform, which is quite shocking.
I was expecting this game to have cross-platform play, especially when this game is built around teamwork and synergy.
But at the same time, I can understand the limitations that are holding this game from embracing the cross-platform feature.
Cross-platform is always a welcome change that allows you to interact with players on different devices. Especially if you have friends that are willing to play with you but who own different consoles.
However, A Way Out features a split-screen mode that allows you to play this game with another player on the same account. You just need to own a single copy of the game to play this with your friend. This is one of the major hurdles that restrict this game to adopt the cross-platform feature.
Let’s suppose you want to play this game on PC while your friend is on Playstation 4. Now the way this game works is that you have to control 2 players and work in tandem to perform tasks and layout your escape plan perfectly.
It seems impossible to share a split-screen with someone on another device. And this is just one factor, once you start considering the input lag, latency, and fps performance, it makes more sense.
You have to gain perfect synchronization with the other players; you have to ensure you have enough fps to play this game smoothly. PC players can achieve huge framerates, but Console players are limited by their technology.
Next comes the latency issue; your internet should be fast enough to play out the puzzles quickly and as fast as you could. If anyone of you has bad internet, you are not finding a way out of this problem anytime soon.
Competitive games are different and cross-platform works differently in those games when you have to compete against each other.
Bad latency, input lag, and low fps don’t affect other players in the lobby. To each to their own. But this game promotes teamwork and working together in flawless sequence.
From the developer’s perspective, they have to face these problems mentioned above and create a cross-platform model that performs the same for everyone, while the devs have to work on eliminating lag, latency issues, and compatibility of the game, which is honestly a lot of work that might take months or even year of hard work and patience.
Are There Any Future Plans?
It’s all speculation at this point because there is no official word from developers about any progress towards cross-platform. No one can say with proof that there is any chance of cross-platform in 2024 or next year.
As I mentioned, the technical limitations prevented this game to adopt the cross-platform model; however, this game was released in 2018. Fast forward to 2024, there is still no cross-platform available yet.
Technology has advanced so much in the past few years that there is a chance that developers might take an interest in cross-platform now. After all, this game was released on consoles and PC.
Having a friend at your house all the time just to play this game on split-screen is a kind of a harsh restriction. People would gladly welcome the change in a positive view, and more people might be tempted to play this once again, but this time with their friends on different consoles. Fingers crossed. Let’s hope for the best
The Final Words:
We have come to the conclusion of this article. I can imagine someone looking at this article with positive expectations but getting bummed out when they find out there is no support for cross-platform in A Way Out.
It is unfortunate indeed, especially for people who want to play with their friends on other platforms, but they can be due to geographical limitations, and to be fair, this is also the reason this game has not feature cross-platform gameplay.
Servers in different countries and areas have different latency, which can cause huge problems during missions where you have to quickly perform tasks and executions.
Each second counts in this game. Either it is replacing objects or distracting security guards so you can escape without alerting anyone.
This requires both players to plan and execute puzzles in the same period of time without any delay from any player.
So I can imagine how difficult it would be if you were to play with someone on a different platform. The difference in latency, input lag, and possible issue of low framerate can ruin your gameplay in a matter of seconds.
There is no doubt it is one of the best Co-op experiences out there and one of the most fun I have had in a while since I played Portal 2 with my friend, but that game does have multiplayer matchmaking, this one doesn’t, and it sure needs one. Let’s hope for the best and look forward to what the future brings to this game ( hopefully a cross-platform mode)
