Rockstar is a well-known, well reputable gaming studio that is responsible for making giant franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.
GTA franchise has always been a fan favorite among many gamers since its release. I still remember the first time I played GTA Vice City on my first console so I can imagine that this franchise holds nostalgic sentiment in many hearts.
GTA V, released in 2013 is still going strong today with millions of players logging onto their consoles and PCs. just like other installments in the franchise, GTA V was released on both console and PC although the PC release took some time.
But is GTA V crossplay? This is the main question that I will explain and hopefully answer today in this guide.
Is GTA 5 & GTA Online Cross-Platform In 2023?
As we know by now, GTA games are not limited to one platform when they are launched. When GTA 5 was released back in 2013, it was at; first, only exclusives to console platforms.
The PC port was released later that year. With the availability of different platforms, you can wonder if there is crossplay available between consoles and PC. Sadly, as of writing this article, crossplay is not an option in GTA V and GTA Online.
The reason is unknown, and one can only guess why is there no cross-play between any platform despite being one of the top-selling games in gaming history.
This can be quite a bummer that you only have to team up with someone on the same platform. If you have friends that are on console and you are on PC, you cant join them in their lobby.
We have yet to see any update regarding this from Rockstar themselves. Maybe there is some kind of game mechanic that is preventing this from happening or some licensing issues between different console companies. Only time will tell what is in store for us in the future.
Is GTA Crossplay Possible Between Ps4 And Ps5?
Technically you can say that GTA V has crossplay between consoles, although this is not what you think it is.
When PS5 was launched, Rockstar allowed players to update their game data and transfer it to the newer gen of the console. Many ps4 players cross progressed their game version to the PS5.
When you cross progress your GTA V data from PS4 to PS5, you are essentially playing the PS4 version of that game on PS5, so it is backward compatible with PS4. This allows you to pair up with other PS4 players in the same lobby.
Talking about Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox consoles offer the same facility to players who upgrade their console to newer gen.
Like I said above, it is indeed possible to crossplay “from a certain point of view” even though it’s not a real definition of crossplay, it is something.
Will GTA Online Ever Get Crossplay?
Many players still to this day hope for some news regarding the crossplay, but it is highly likely that we might not get a crossplay. If you think about it, this game is almost 10 years old.
Nearly a decade, and not to mention Rockstar has confirmed the making of GTA 6 officially. This dims out any hope for a crossplay update for this game.
Crossplay will require them to dedicate resources and time towards changing and optimizing the mechanics of the game.
This will divert their attention from the upcoming installment in this franchise. I do not have to be the bearer of bad news, but it is time that we all move on and accept it.
