Mewtwo is an iconic Pokemon that has made several appearances in Pokemon games and anime since the 90s. It is known that Mewtwo came to existence through a science experiment. However, what’s for sure is that a well-known Pokemon like Mewtwo was bound to make an appearance in Pokemon Go as well.
Given the AR nature of the game, catching a Pokemon in Pokemon Go is a tad-bit different from catching a Pokemon in a generic Pokemon game. Below you’ll find a detailed guide on how to get Mewtwo in Pokemon Go.
How To Get Mewtwo In Pokemon GO
Catching Mewtwo in Pokemon Go will require you to bring up you’re A-game. Mewtwo can only be caught during raids. Therefore, you’ll have to wait until this beast of a Pokemon decides to take over a gym.
Since there’re no raid battles available in the game currently, you can always try and convince someone to trade in their Mewtwo with you.
What Are Pokémon Go Mewtwo’s Stats?
To begin with, Mewtwo is a Psychic-type Pokemon. In the previous games, Mewtwo would evolve to become a fighting-type Pokemon as well; however, for Pokemon Go, it’s only a Psychic-type Pokemon.
Moving on towards its stats, Mewtwo has learned to attack pretty well. Its attack stands at an astounding 300, whereas it lacks a bit in defense which stands at 182. Lastly, Mewtwo has a 214 stamina and a max CP of 4724.
Mewtwo will fall weak against Bug, Dark, and Ghost-type Pokemon. On the other hand, Mewtwo is strong against Fighting and other Psychic-type Pokemon.
Mewtwo Versus Armored Mewtwo
As if the original Mewtwo wasn’t intimidating enough, developers of the game have introduced another Mewtwo, the Armored Mewtwo.
Armored Mewtwo made its first appearance in the Pokemon: The First Movie, which has been recently remade by Netflix by the name Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back — Evolution. And later, it was introduced to the Pokemon Go game as well.
While it seems that Armored Mewtwo is a better version of Mewtwo itself, it’s definitely not the case. Both of them come with their own sets of pros and cons.
As the name suggests, Armored Mewtwo leads the way when it comes to defense, while its offense is less than that of the regular Mewtwo.
However, having an Armored Mewtwo in your family is still way cooler, given that it was available for a limited time only, and it cannot be caught currently. If you want one on your team, you can get it through trading.

Mewtwo was founded through a science experiment. Most of the Pokemon that were created through scientific experiments are Psychic type pokemon. While others can have multiple types, Mewtwo is a purely Psychic-type Pokemon.
Given the rarity of the Pokemon and intensity of its attacks, and the fear associated with this Pokemon, Mewtwo proves that it’s a Psychic-type Pokemon.
Moreover, Psychic-type Pokemons are known to put their mind to good use during the battles. And this explains their high special stats and low physical stats. Not just this, Psychic-type attacks are special attacks as well.

How To Find Armored Mewtwo
It’s not easy to get your hands on a legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Go. To begin with, they can only be caught during five start raids. Secondly, five-star raids are extremely difficult to conquer. Lastly, five-star raids are only available a few times a year.
Armored Mewtwo is one of the Pokemon that was available last year during (Remake) Pokemon Netflix film promotions that could be caught during a five-star raid.
While regular Mewtwo might appear again in some special event, the chances of you catching Armored Mewtwo now are very low.
Armored Mewtwo does look cooler than the regular Mewtwo, but other than the aesthetics, there’s not a lot of difference between the two Pokemon. Therefore, you can always keep your hopes up and try catching a regular Mewtwo in the next raid.
However, if you’re still after Armored Mewtwo, you can always have it through a trade. Since Armored Mewtwo is a legendary Pokemon, it can only be traded during Special Trades. Special Trades become available once per day only.
Once you’ve found yourself lucky enough to log into the game while a special trade is going on, you’ll be needing a lot of stardust to get your hands on Armored Mewtwo.
Armored Mewtwo Weaknesses And Counters
Just like the regular Mewtwo, Armored Mewtwo is a Psychic-type Pokemon as well. It doesn’t differ a lot from its regular counterpart; however, it does have a better defense given its armor. However, where it gains in defense, it lacks in the offense.
This means that if Armored Mewtwo is on the opposite side during a battle, you’ll have to put in more effort to defeat it as compared to the regular Mewtwo.
Being a Psychic-type Pokemon, Armored Mewtwo is weak against Bug, Dark, and Ghost-type Pokemon. Below I’ve given a list of all the Pokemon that can be put up against Armored Mewtwo.
- Darkrai
- Giratina
- Hydreigon
- Chandelure
- Gengar
- Mewtwo
- Tyranitar
- Honchkrow
- Scizor
- Banette
All of the above-mentioned counters for Armored Mewtwo are in the order of best to worst. Therefore, if you’re determined on winning a battle against Armored Mewtwo, your best choice is Darkrai. Darkrai has some of the best Dark-type moves, such as Snarl and Dark Pulse.
However, if Darkrai is not available in your party, then any Pokemon with distinct Dark or Ghost-type moves will get the job done for you.
Final Verdict:
Mewtwo is one of the most desirable Pokemon in Pokemon Go, and you’ll definitely be leading the way if you have one in your party. However, getting a Mewtwo or Armored Mewtwo in Pokemon Go is no easy feat.
For Mewtwo, you’ll have to wait for a five-star raid to appear, and if you’re lucky enough, you’ll find the gym has been taken over by Mewtwo. Armored Mewtwo, on the other hand, will not be available in the game to catch anymore.
However, you can always spend some stardust and have both of these Pokemon in your party if you’re not willing to put in any extra effort.
