Risk of Rain was succeeded by Risk of Rain 2 when Hoppo Games decided to take their hot Roguelike game 3D.

Talking of the game itself, there isn’t much to it. You get to choose from 10 available characters, and then spend the next two hours fighting bosses and antagonists.

For a game, this simple with pretty basic graphics, what makes it so special is the multiplayer mode, which allows you to play with up to four friends. And it gets even better if the game features cross-platform gameplay. But, is Risk of Rain 2 cross-platform?

Games like these are meant to be played with your friends. Given the simplicity of the game, you’re bound to get bored while collecting loot and killing enemies.

In fact, the current version of the game features a final boss, which marks an end to the game; the early release didn’t even have that. This meant endless hours of mainstream gameplay!

Hoppo Games was kind enough to make Risk of Rain 2 multiplatform which means you won’t be running to the store to get yourself a new console only to play the game.

Risk of Rain 2 is available to play on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.

The current list of platforms on which the game is available lacks the latest gen consoles. The game can be played on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S; however, you won’t be getting to see all the features as those in last-gen consoles.

Before I answer the long-awaited question, let’s dig into what exactly is a cross-platform gameplay feature.

Cross-platform allows you to play the game with your friend who’s on a different platform. This means that if a game is cross-platform between PS4 and Xbox One, two players on PS4 and Xbox One can play the game together.

This saves you the hassle of buying the same console/platform as that of your friends only so that you can play your favorite multiplayer together.

However, if you’re playing Risk of Rain 2, you might as well consider getting the same console as your friends since the game doesn’t offer cross-platform gameplay.

If done right, cross-platform gameplay can only mean good news for the developers. Since players on different consoles can play the game together, this increases the publicity of the game. Still, Hoppo games have decided not to offer any cross-platform compatibility to the game.

This means that if you’re playing the game on a PlayStation console, then you can only play it multiplayer with your friend who’s playing on a PlayStation console as well.

Will Risk of Rain 2 Ever Get Crossplay In The Future?

Making a game cross-platform is not an easy feat, given the risk and cost associated with the project. Making a game cross-platform is time-consuming and expensive.

This, coupled with the fact that some platforms charge a heavy fee to the developers to allow them to make their cross-platform game compatible with their system, developing such game is quite challenging.

Secondly, making a game cross-platform requires additional time, as well as more human resources.

And even if you keep other constraints under check, there might be connectivity issues in a cross-platform game that will require further research and development to resolve.

While some developers are able to bear these expenses and challenges, Hoppo Games is not quite there yet.

Also, there hasn’t been any announcement from the developers regarding the game going cross-platform. Therefore, there’re no chances of the game going cross-platform in the near future.

The Verdict:

A cross-platform game is bound to bring in more excitement and joy as compared to a single platform game. However, making a game cross-platform is not that easy.

And if you look around, there are only a few prominent titles such as Warzone and Fortnite that are cross-platform without any issues or bugs.

While cross-platform gameplay is not available for Risk of Rain 2, this doesn’t mean the game is not worth buying. It’s still one of the best multiplayer games available in the market to play with your friends over the weekend.
